The A to Zen of Management
The A to Zen of Management Book Cover

An A to Zen of Management is a deceptive book.

It contains an alphabet of key words and phrases found in management and then distils down a great deal of thought about them into apparently simple statements.

But in the Zen tradition, these simple statements have hidden levels to them. They are there to take the reader into a deeper discourse, a meditation on his or her workplace and the activities that occur within it.

Competition

Within this process the reader is author, deciding on meaning, defending his or her own interpretation, agreeing with aspects of the definition or contesting them.

In this way the reader embarks on a journey of ‘uncovery’, encountering hidden mental sets concerning management and the workplace that have become so embedded, they are rarely thought about.

An A to Zen is an ideal textbook for coaching.

  • It can sit open on a desk at a particular page, underwriting a manager’s target to change an aspect of practice.
  • It can lie by the bed and be dipped into before sleep, allowing the mind to work fertilely on an aspect of professional behaviour.
  • It can act as a catalyst to draw to the surface elements of experience that the manager wishes to discuss with his or her coach.

Like a homeopathic medicine, An A to Zen can slip into the mind without causing any harm – but, nevertheless, galvanising thought and enabling the individual to take responsibility for necessary change.
